When we study a language so that we will be able to understand and communicate with others we concentrate on the grammar, phrasing and the conjugation of our verbs. What is often overlooked is that the language we speak can have a richness and diversity of meaning. This means that what we want to say gets lost in misunderstanding or is misinterpreted in the en-coding and de-coding stages within the communication process itself.
Communication can be described as the exchange of information between people by means of speaking, writing or using a common system of non-verbal exchange, signs or behaviour. It is most effective when it is a two-way process. This certainly may start to describe the technical aspect of communication. This definition fails to reference those other important intangible considerations that influence the success of HOW you communicate effectively. These include what you communicate or whether it is attractive to the receiver of that communication; it may or may not influence them to listen, or understand or do something that agrees and supports the idea or viewpoint being communicated. Communication can enable the succinct expression of emotion, concept, support, idea or the steps required for success and so on. It’s really amazing that we communicate at all well in some instances!
Our work can and has involved the practice and development of the core communication skills; very often the topic is touched upon in nearly all our work to some degree or another!
In its broader perspective our role extends to:
- helping organisations implement their communication plan
- helping to create an environment conducive for open and frank discussion and expression of thought and new ideas
- helping individuals take ownerships and responsibility for new approaches, new products and new sales channels for B2B or B2C markets.
Our work in this arena has certainly incorporated:
- the communication of organisational values
- behavioural alignment to new or renewed brand messages
- SH&E issues affecting organisational performance and facilitating discussion on how to reduce instances of injury or fatality.
